Cranes are machines that lift and carry items that are too heavy for people, to places that those people aren’t physically able to carry them.

Types of cranes

Because there are so many industries that have their own requirements and methods of lifting, there needs to be an array of crane styles and categories to cater for them.

There are sixteen main types of cranes. Each of which are unique to specific fields.

Here are some of the most common crane categories that are used in construction:

Tower cranes

There are various types of tower cranes. The main ones used in construction are Self-Erecting Cranes, otherwise known as Pedestrian Operated Tower Cranes (Ped-ops); luffing jibs (luffers), and saddle jibs, otherwise known as flat-tops or saddlebacks. Crawler cranes

Crawler cranes are tracked machines. Some of which are capable of lifting very heavy loads. They generally have lattice booms, of which can accommodate jib extensions if needed. But some have telescopic booms. Crawler cranes get transported to site and built on arrival.

Wheeled telescopic cranes

Wheeled telescopic cranes are more commonly known as mobile cranes. They get driven to site, therefore, operators using them need an HGV license as well as their crane license.

The beauty of mobile cranes is in the name. Because they are so easily transportable, they can be hired for ad hoc lifts, not only in construction but on busy streets, by companies or for domestic use. They’re also often used on wind farms.

How do cranes work?

First, for cranes to work, they need a power source, whether it’s electricity from generators or the main grid, or diesel. Some cranes are now even battery powered.

Cranes work using the age-old system of pulleys and counterbalancing. Steel cable, that is wrapped around a drum attached to a winch, travels through a series of pulleys and sheeves to help increase the lifting capacity. The more pulleys there are, the more weight the crane can lift.

Counterweights at the back of cranes counteract the weight that gets lifted at the front. This helps to prevent the crane from tipping over.

Parts of a crane

Crane parts vary, depending on the type of crane. But the main parts are as follows.

  • Hook
  • Slew ring
  • Boom/jib
  • Counterweight

Hook

Crane hooks hang from jibs/booms using hoist rope. Loads and lifting accessories attach to the hooks for lifting.

Slew ring

Crane slew rings are the central part of cranes that help them rotate 360°. They’re also known as turntables.

Counterweight

As stated previously, to keep cranes stable, counterweights at the back counteract weight being lifted at the front. The weight of the counterweights should be greater than the crane’s lifting capacity. Because of this and built in sensors, when cranes do tip over it is usually down to operator error. Cranes that travel on the ground are more likely to tip over than tower cranes, because most tower cranes are anchored into the ground using large bases.

How are tower cranes built?

To most people, quite how tower cranes spring up in city skylines is quite the mystery. Well, it takes a lot of planning, logistics, and teamwork.

The process to building tower cranes goes in these stages:

  • Planning
  • Base build
  • Erecting crane
  • Test and sign off

Planning

Engineers, operation managers, and appointed persons (APs) decide what size cranes are going in which locations. The weights of the heaviest loads throughout the project must be predetermined to ensure each crane is sufficient enough to lift them. Also, each crane must have enough reach to cover the majority of the project.

In some cases, various authorities must be notified when a crane is to be erected, such as Network Rail (if the crane will be close to a rail line) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The crane must be high enough to clear the structure that it’s due to build. And if it is due to be 100m Above Ground Level (AGL), the CAA must be notified. They must also be notified if crane is to be erected within 6km of aerodromes or airfields, and 10m AGL or surrounding trees or structures, if higher.

Base build

Crane bases are designed and built in relation to elements like ground or existing platform conditions, crane type and size, and local wind speeds.

The types of bases for tower cranes are:

  • Piled-foundation bases
  • Gravity bases
  • Grillages
  • Ballasted cruciform bases

Erecting the crane

Tower cranes get erected by specialist teams of crane erectors, usually over weekends when sites are not busy, and road closures, if needed, are more attainable. Mobile cranes or other tower cranes are used to lift the crane parts.

  • The counter-jib (or back-jib) gets installed.
  • If not preinstalled, winches and electrical panels are placed on the back-jib.
  • The main jib gets attached to the front. This is where the crane’s lifting work gets done.
  • Ballast weights (counterweights) get installed at the rear to balance the crane out.

Test and sign off

Once a tower crane is built, all the functions get tested to make sure it is fully operational. Then, the crane lifts a test weight to calibrate the scales and ensure it can lift to its full capacity.

Before the crane can be put to work, it must undergo a LOLER thorough inspection. This gets done prior to use on any lifting machinery assembled on site. This inspection gets repeated annually to certify the crane.

Twenty per cent of all fatal and non-fatal injuries in the UK are head-related, yet head protection accounts for only three per cent of personal protective equipment (PPE) purchases.[2] When head protection is acquired, nearly a quarter of workers are unaware that exceeding the expiry date of a hard hat can reduce its protective qualities. Arco, the UK’s leading safety company, is joining forces with Headway – the brain injury association, and Centurion, head protection system specialist, to raise awareness of the importance of selecting, wearing and maintaining head protection.

Any kind of head injury can lead to debilitating and long-term health issues, so ensuring that head protection is worn and cared for correctly is critical in preventing life changing injuries. Helmet shells are designed to be shock absorbent; however, the material properties used to protect workers can also be sensitive to chemical attack. More than half of workers mark or apply decals and labels to their helmet, unknowingly decreasing its durability by compromising the integrity of the material it is made from.[3] To maintain safety standards, workers should remove any unchecked stickers and sanitise and clean their head protection equipment in a safe environment. Additionally, workers should audit their safety helmet or hard hat for signs of wear and tear and make sure it is in date.

Hydroforming is simply using the force of a liquid such as water, oil, or hydraulic fluids to shape a component. It is an affordable way of making ductile metals like brass, alloy steel, aluminum, stainless steel, etc. into different forms and shapes. Most metals that have the ability to cold-form can get hydro formed. This helps to make them strong and structurally stiff.

Hydroforming works as a type of specialized die forming. It utilizes high-pressure hydraulic liquids to press working materials that are at room temperature into a die. In this way, complex shapes which would ordinarily be impossible are formed without need for welding.

Hydroforming is used in a variety of industries most especially in the automobile and aerospace industries. These industries make use of these composite shapes to manufacture lighter, stronger as well as rigid one-piece structures. These structures are then used in manufacturing car and plane parts.

In this type of method, there is bladder forming where in that bladder contains the fluid. Therefore, the liquid does not come in direct contact with the sheet. This type is quite similar to using stamping but a rubber diaphragm is used.

This diaphragm is supported by up to 18,000 psi of oil pressure and works as the other punch half. When this pressure is increased, it forces the metal into the press taking its shape. The tooling cost for this method is reduced in half because only one part of the die is needed.

The process starts with a blank sheet, a blank holder, a die as well as a punch. The blank piece is placed into the holder which is over the die. The die’s cavity is the shape of the part that is to be formed. The next step is the punch moves towards the sheet and pushes it into the die.

This stretches or bends the part into the required shape but does not alter the sheet’s strength. The shapes formed may be straight or may have different cross-sections, curved walls and so on. The most common though are rectangles and cylinders. Examples of these parts are cans, cups, fuel tanks, car frames, etc.

Tubular Hydroforming

Tubular hydroforming is so named because of the metal tubes utilized as the foundation for the formed part. It is a particularly useful process for the automotive industry as there is a great requirement for tubular parts. 

In this process, pressurized fluid is used on the insides of the tube. This metal is pushed out into the mold that is surrounding it thereby getting its shape. This process is used to create a variety of tubing as well as pipes of different lengths, shapes and weights.

Stiffness, dimensional accuracy, as well as strength, are effortlessly achieved using this process. It also helps to make light and safe parts for the automobile industry.

To get the hole drilled, there are two kinds of hole punches we have observed. The first is something that looks and works like a paper puncher pliers.

To use it, you have to identify the part that needs to be punched. Afterward, you fit that part in between the hole punch and press tightly. The essence of holding firmly is to ensure that the metal does not slip away, getting an unexpected place punched.

The second hole punch we have observed works like a vice. It has two ends, one of which you can screw and unscrew. To use this option, you are to make sure the tool is unscrewed first. This is so that you can fit the metal into the appropriate part of the hole punch.

After it is fitted in, the next step is to screw the tool right above the chosen spot. You can then unscrew after drilling.

We strongly recommend the latter option if you are finding it hard to choose between both hole punches explained here. This is because of the ease of use and the flawless holes it makes.

Compared to the first option, the chances of having unwanted ring marks and sharp edges around the drilled hole are little or none. So, the vice-styled punch hole is the perfect option in our opinion.

The combination of highly fluorescent material alongside reflective tape creates the optimum design to ensure you’re still visible against even the busiest backdrops. But have you ever considered how exactly hi-vis clothing works? We’re going to take a closer look at how exactly it shines bright enough to keep so many of us safe on-site every single day, but first let’s take a look at how hi vis workwear came about.

When was high visibility workwear born?

In the UK hi vis workwear was first issued to railway workers well over 50 years ago now, in the 1960s. It was first trialled by Glaswegian railway workers who were given fluorescent orange jackets, then known as ‘fireflies’.

Around this time electric railways were becoming faster and these construction work jackets were deemed essential to ensure that the workers were visible by train drivers from long distances of up to half a mile away. Unsurprisingly, these trials were a huge success, and soon after hi-vis jackets became essential for all British Railway workers.

The next logical step was to introduce high visibility workwear to any profession where workers would be in close proximity to moving vehicles or working in poor visibility conditions. And therefore hi viz workwear as we know it today, was born.

How exactly does hi vis work?

Let’s take a look at the science behind hi vis material – first of all, the fluorescent material which makes up the bulk of hi viz workwear. On-site you’ll most commonly see yellow and orange hi vis clothing, as these are arguably the most visible colours to the human eye. But what is it exactly that makes these fluorescent colours so bright?

It’s all down to the way in which the ultraviolet rays of the sun react with the fluorescent colours. This reaction makes them appear to ‘glow’, meaning that in natural daylight these colours will be at their brightest. The less sunlight or UV rays for the material to interact with, then the less these fluorescent colours will appear to glow. Which is why they’re cleverly paired with reflective tape – we’ll come onto that next!

Arguably the most important aspect of high visibility workwear is the reflective strip detailing. These reflective strips are essential to help ensure you’re visible at night time and in low lighting, where the fluorescent colours won’t be picking up on any UV lights to react with.

There are generally two types of reflective tape found on hi vis workwear, these are micro-prismatic tape and glass bead reflective tape. Let’s take a look at the differences between the two and how exactly they work.

Micro-prismatic Tape

Micro-prismatic tape is made from a unique type of plastic vinyl which contains lots of microscopic prisms. These tiny prisms inside the vinyl work by bouncing any light that comes into contact with the tape around internally, before then reflecting it back out. Micro-prismatic tape is known for its ability to reflect light at a distance whilst also maintaining it’s intensity – keeping you incredibly safe whilst working in dark conditions.

Glass Bead Reflective Tape

Glass bead reflective tape is probably the reflective tape you’ll have seen most commonly on commercial hi vis workwear including hi vis vests, this is because it’s such an affordable material which is also incredibly easy to add to a garment. Glass bead reflective tape shines a very bright white when it comes into contact with direct light, therefore providing a high level of safety for its wearer.

When working on a construction site, there are plenty of PPE considerations to bear in mind but hi vis workwear has to be one of the most important steps to take to protect your employees or yourself. How to set up your combination ladder  

  • The first thing to do when setting up your combination ladders is to remove the extension piece and stand it up with the stabiliser bar at the top of the stairway. Note that you may need some assistance when it comes to setting up and moving the ladder.
  • The next thing to do when setting up your combination ladder is to hinge the base and middle sections so that they sit in the same way as a step ladder. You then need to refit the extension piece upside down on the rear of the middle section. Ensure that each of the rung hooks is pointing upwards and outwards.
  • The final thing you have to do is to stand the extension piece on a step lower from the one you need to work from and adjust until the metal locking bars are horizontal.

Other safety measures

Once these things have been done, your combination ladder is now ready to be used. All that is left to do is to ensure that other health and safety measures are met. These include making sure the ladder’s feet are secure and as far from the edges of the stairs’ steps as possible and that no other objects can affect your work such as a hanging light. If you’re working by yourself, it’s recommended that you tie the ladder to the stair’s bannister to ensure it is kept steady whilst you carry out your work.

Diesel engines also usually outlast petrol engines and are actually better suited to the sort of work cycle that scissor lifts demands, as well as being up to 15-20% more efficient on rough terrain.

Anti-slip – Any scissor lift worth its salt will be fitted with a safe, slip-resistant platform and extensions. In addition it is worth double checking that the model has joystick drive and steering controls for easy manoeuvrability.

Check equipment standards and condition

As in any business it pays to inspect condition and check for the compliance of the model with health and safety guidance before signing on the dotted line. There is no worse feeling than having work come to a standstill because of faulty or inadequate equipment. A little prior research can save you a BIG headache in the long run. It is also highly advisable to check with your insurance company that your liability insurance covers staff while operating the equipment.

Finally, make sure that when you have chosen and hired your scissor lift that it is left in the hands of someone that is correctly trained in how to assemble, move, inspect, maintain and use the lift to mitigate against accidents in the workplace.
